There is a global interest and initiatives in setting achievable sustainability goals that will meet national, industry and corporate objectives in reducing carbon footprint.
The RICS whole life carbon assessment (WLCA) standard 2nd edition was launched on 19 September and is set to become the global standard for consistent and accurate carbon measurement in the built environment. The standards update has been released at a time when the industry is feeling pressured to act and respond and it provides the industry an opportunity to stay optimistic in forecasting progress toward their goals.
The standard enables assessors to estimate the amount of carbon emitted through the life cycle of a constructed asset and aims to help manage carbon budgets, reduce lifetime emissions, and deliver a more sustainable built environment. Two parts of the standards are sometimes overlooked or not spoken about in detail which are stages B and D:
These life cycle stages play an important role while managing buildings and the circular economy.
