Overview

Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) provide a standardised way of declaring the impacts of manufacturing, packaging, using and disposing of products. EPD are increasingly sought by designers and the wider supply chain to understand a product’s environmental impact and to calculate embodied and whole life carbon building assessments.

The overarching standard for EPD is EN 15804:2012+A2:2019. EPD are checked and verified by an independent third-party expert and are usually valid for 5 years.

This webinar has several learning outcomes which include:

  • You will learn what metrics are included in an EPD – it’s not just carbon!
  • What are the top 10 things to look at?
  • How many EPD are there and where can you find them?
  • Can you make comparisons with other EPDs?
  • How do they benefit the manufacturer and how much do they cost?

Programme

  • 12:30    Welcome, and Introduction to ASBP – Simon Corbey MRICS, CEO, ASBP
  • 12.40    Greenhouse Gas Emissions  – Frank Hovorka, MRICS, Board member and Sustainability Chair, RICS
    • From top down Nationally Determined Contributions to bottom up measurement
    • Greenhouse Gas Emissions from the built environment – 3 different metrics but the  same unit CO2eq/m²/year: In use (present and yearly), Embodied , Life Cycle Assessment  (future based on a 50 years lifespan)
    • How and what to disclose in an extra financial report : the EU CSRD case
  • 12.55    EPD Overview – Jane Anderson, ConstructionLCA and co-author of RICS WLC Professional Statement
    • An introduction to EPD
      • The International Perspective: where are they used? Will they be mandated?
      • Using EPD for Green Claims
      • What information do they contain? It’s not just carbon.
      • Ten basics to consider; issue date – is it still valid? Functional unit, product description, scope, biogenic carbon, end of life phase, toxicity etc
    • How to find and extract data
      • Where you locate EPD and how many are there now?
      • Selecting data
      • How to assess the carbon uncertainty factor according to RICS WLCA.
      • Making comparisons with other products
      • What emerging technologies and platforms might assist
  • 13.20    The SME manufacturer’s perspective – Mark Lynn, CEO, Thermafleece
    • What have been the positives from conducting the EPD?
    • How much did they cost?
    • How is the biogenic carbon calculated and presented
  • 13.45    Q&A and panel discussion
  • 14.00    END
